Southern belle of a city, Savannah, sits seaside, well-stocked with cultural attractions, historic sites and if you believe what they say, the occasional ghostly visitor.
Follow the sound of cannon fire along the Savannah River to Old Fort Jackson, a brick fort (and National Historic Landmark) nearly two hundred years old that once was a key defensive post during the American Civil War. These days the cannon fire is friendly of course, either a salute to passing military vessels or part of the daily summer demonstration, but visitors to the fort can get a glimpse at least of what life might have been like when occupied by troops on a wander around the parade ground and a look inside open rooms. Be sure to enjoy the view of the river from the upper battle area before you sally forth.
