In addition to miles of sand fringed with beach grass and cooled by salt breezes, Cumberland Island National Seashore is the spot to star-gaze, hike meandering trails, bird-watch and catch cultural sights, all within easy reach of the Landmark Historic District of Jekyll Island, to the north.
Rocks shaped by primeval forces form the boulevards of Rock City Gardens, a geological attraction in northeastern Georgia that has delighted visitors since this "citadel of rocks" was formally discovered in the early 19th-century by missionaries to the Native Americans. Since the 1930's the charms of this site have become better known, and a steady stream of walkers now head for the heights of Lover's Leap via the 1,000 Ton Balanced Rock, Observation Point, Swing-a-Long Bridge and Tortoise Shell Rock to catch many a spectacular sunset over the Georgia hills.
