In addition to miles of sand fringed with beach grass and cooled by salt breezes, Cumberland Island National Seashore is the spot to star-gaze, hike meandering trails, bird-watch and catch cultural sights, all within easy reach of the Landmark Historic District of Jekyll Island, to the north.
Fancy a get-away from city traffic? Head for Stone Mountain Park, an outdoor-oriented space that ranges from carefully groomed golf courses (two) to 363 acre lake via 15 miles of hiking trails and lush wooded scenery. Whether your aim is making tee-time, an afternoon of angling or a walk in this park, plan to spend a day here to allow for enough hours to admire the view from atop Stone Mountain and catch the hands-on exhibits on show at the Confederate Hall Historical and Environmental Education Center. There's also a quaint old grist mill to see, an informative Quarry Exhibit and a Songbird Habitat and Trail, the latter the perfect place to spot cardinals and a nuthatch or two. The park has camping sites, a spring lasershow and a variety of seasonal festivals guaranteed to fill the days if visiting the Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard or recreated Southern 1870's town, Crossroads, doesn't. Get around to see the sights on a paddlewheel boat ride, the Scenic Railroad, the Summit Skyride, Ride the Ducks or Pedal Boats for a change of pace.
